Golden Hour Food Crawl

Evening · from 5pm~3 hours1.2 km walkBring cash
  1. 17:00 · Stop 1

No tables, just red stools on the pavement — that's the point. Order the green chicken curry over rice (~45฿). A Chinatown institution since the 1940s.

  2. 18:00 · Stop 2

Charcoal-toasted buns dripping with filling. Butter & condensed milk is the classic; pandan custard is the local pick. Eat it on the spot — it doesn't travel.

  3. 18:45 · Stop 3

Michelin Bib Gourmand. The peppery guay jub broth hits before the spoon does. Order the rolled noodles with crispy pork — queue moves fast.

  4. 19:45 · Finale

The green-shirt crew on the corner of Phadung Dao. Salt-baked sea bass, grilled river prawns, morning glory. Sit streetside and watch Yaowarat roar past.

Temples & Treasures

Morning · from 8:30am~4 hours2 km walkCover shoulders & knees

Bangkok's most important Chinese temple. Incense coils, red lanterns and locals making merit. Free entry — quietly observe the rituals.

  3. 11:00 · Stop 3

A kilometre-long covered maze of fabric, beads, toys and chaos. Mind the motorbikes squeezing through — it's part of the experience.

  4. 12:15 · Finale

A 100-year-old Chinese coffee shop. Old-school filter coffee, kaya toast and steamed buns. The air-conditioned upstairs is your reward.

Neon Nights on Soi Nana

Night · from 7pmOpen-ended400 m walk18+
  1. 19:00 · Stop 1

Start with dinner — modern Chinese plates and cocktails in a restored shophouse glowing red. Book ahead on weekends.

  2. 20:30 · Stop 2

Push through the heavy antique door: Bangkok's original craft gin bar. Tiny, moody, brilliant. Try the chrysanthemum gin & tonic.

  3. 21:45 · Stop 3

Thai-herb yadong spirits and live traditional music most nights. The cultural heart of the soi — order the yadong tasting set.

  4. 23:00 · Nightcap

A florist-turned-bar over three creaky floors. Head for the rooftop, order something with berries, toast the moon. You're 5 minutes from bed.

⛵ For the Family

River & Royal Day

Day trip · from 9am~6 hoursBoats + short walksKid-friendly
  1. 09:00 · Stop 1

46 metres of gold-leaf Buddha. Kids love dropping coins in the 108 bronze bowls behind the statue. Grab a Grab or take the river boat from Ratchawong pier.

  2. 11:00 · Stop 2

Take the 5฿ cross-river ferry from Tha Tien — a two-minute adventure in itself. The porcelain-studded spire sparkles in the midday sun.

  3. 13:00 · Stop 3

Mountains of marigolds and jasmine garlands, open 24 hours. A riot of colour and the best-smelling place in Bangkok.

  4. 14:30 · Finale

Hop a boat downriver. Indoor floating market on the ground floor, a waterfall on level 6, blissful air-con everywhere. Reward ice cream mandatory.

Hidden Lanes & Lenses

Late afternoon · from 3:30pm~3 hours2.5 km walkGolden-hour finish
  1. 15:30 · Stop 1

Murals tangled between rusted engine parts and century-old shophouses. Get lost on purpose — every wrong turn is a photo.

  2. 16:30 · Stop 2

A 200-year-old Hokkien courtyard house with a dive pool in the middle (really). 50฿ entry, redeemable against a drink. Closed Mondays.

  3. 17:30 · Stop 3

Cut back through the market as shutters come down — shafts of late light, motorbikes stacked with boxes, pure Chinatown texture.

  4. 18:15 · Finale

Vendors building garlands under bare bulbs as the sky turns pink. The best low-light photography in the old city — then walk home along Song Wat Road.

👁️ For the Curious

Bizarre Yaowarat

Afternoon · from 3pm~3.5 hours3 km walkStrange but true
  1. 15:00 · Stop 1

A temple that has kept crocodiles for over a century. Legend says the first one wandered in from the canal and the monks simply let it stay; its most famous resident now sits preserved beside the pond. Free entry, almost no tourists.

  2. 16:00 · Stop 2

Possibly the oldest Chinese shrine in Thailand — 300+ years — hidden so deep in a wet-market alley off Yaowarat Soi 6 that thousands walk past daily without knowing. Finding it is half the fun.

  3. 16:45 · Stop 3

Built in 1833 by Madam Faeng, a wealthy brothel owner, with the earnings of her trade — the name roughly means "temple built from the proceeds of prostitutes." The King reportedly approved it with a wry smile. Her statue still watches over it.

  4. 17:30 · Stop 4

A rusted antique Fiat slowly being swallowed by the neighbourhood, parked among engine-part shops and shrines. Nobody moves it; everybody photographs it. The surrounding lanes are scattered with mechanical relics.

  5. 18:15 · Finale

At the foundation beside this temple, locals make merit by donating coffins for the unclaimed dead — one of Bangkok's most moving and surreal rituals. You can take part for a small donation (~100–500฿). Walk or hop one MRT stop to Sam Yan.

🏮 致我们的中国客人 · For Our Chinese Guests

寻根 · Roots of Chinatown

Full day · from 9am~7 hours2.5 km walk + ferry中文友好 · Mandarin-friendly
  1. 09:00 · 第一站 Stop 1

建于1871年,是泰国最重要的华人佛寺,供奉观音菩萨与三宝佛。Bangkok's most important Chinese Mahayana temple, founded in 1871 by a monk from Guangdong. The incense, the lantern courtyard, the chanting in Teochew — this is where Bangkok's Chinese identity still lives. Free entry. Light incense and pay respects to 观音 (Guanyin).

  2. 10:15 · 第二站 Stop 2

百年老市场。Dried abalone, fish maw, bird's nest, ginseng, century-old Chinese medicine shops — exactly the kind of market your grandparents grew up with. The smells and the signage in Chinese will feel familiar. Bargain politely; cash only.

  3. 11:30 · 第三站 Stop 3

曼谷最古老的华人商业街,自19世纪起就是华商批发中心。A kilometre-long covered market — fabrics, beads, lanterns, red envelopes. Walk slowly, watch for the motorbikes weaving through. Many stalls are run by 3rd-generation Chinese-Thai families.

  4. 12:30 · 午餐 Lunch

1972年开业的粤菜老字号,曼谷最有名的华人餐厅之一。Cantonese institution since 1972. Famous for shark fin soup (鱼翅), bird's nest (燕窝), crispy roast duck, and a dim sum menu in Chinese. Most staff speak Mandarin and Teochew. Generous portions, fair prices for what it is.

  5. 14:00 · 第四站 Stop 4

世界最大的纯金佛像 — 5.5 吨重,曾被石膏覆盖隐藏了几个世纪。The world's largest solid gold Buddha — 5.5 tonnes, hidden under plaster for centuries and rediscovered by accident in 1955. Entry 100฿. The Chinese-Thai heritage museum on the upper floor tells the story of how Chinese immigrants built Bangkok.

  6. 15:00 · 第五站 Stop 5

曼谷最古老的华人金店,自1880年代营业至今。Bangkok's oldest Chinese gold dealer, in business since the 1880s. The building itself is a heritage site. Even if you're not buying, walk in and feel a piece of old Chinatown still trading as it did 140 years ago. (Gold here trades close to Shanghai prices — bring your phone calculator.)

  7. 16:00 · 第六站 Stop 6

1999年为庆祝国王登基72周年而建的中式牌坊。The iconic red-and-gold paifang gate at Odeon Circle, built in 1999 to honour the King's 72nd birthday. The most-photographed spot in Yaowarat. Best photos at golden hour just before the neon comes on. Cross the street carefully.

  8. 18:00 · 晚餐 Dinner

米其林必比登。Michelin Bib Gourmand. The peppery rolled-noodle soup with crispy pork belly is Teochew-Thai food at its peak — exactly what your Chaozhou great-aunt would have cooked. Open until midnight. Most signage is in Chinese.

  9. 21:00 · 收尾 Nightcap

19世纪华人贸易港口,修复后成为文化园区,供奉妈祖。A restored 19th-century Chinese trade port across the river. A shrine to 妈祖 (Mazu, goddess of seafarers) sits at the heart of the courtyard. Quiet, atmospheric, perfect end to the day. Take a Grab or the cross-river ferry.

Live Music Nights

Evenings · from 7pmPick one venue per nightGrab between most stops18+
  1. 19:00 · Closest to home

5 minutes' walk. Live traditional Thai music most nights — Phin guitar, percussion, sometimes folk singers. The yadong tasting set pairs perfectly with the music. Heritage shophouse vibe; small, intimate, packed by 9pm on weekends.

  2. 20:00 · Walk further into Chinatown

A restored 1930s Chinese-style commercial building. The upper floors house bars and pop-up live music — often jazz quartets or solo singers. The building itself is the destination as much as the music. Walking distance from the shophouse via Soi Phadungdao.

  3. 21:00 · The classic

At the Mandarin Oriental, riverside. Bangkok's oldest jazz bar — opened 1953. Old-Hollywood glamour, dark wood, brass, a small stage, top-tier international jazz acts most nights. Smart casual dress. Take the ferry from Ratchawong pier (10 min) or Grab. Drinks are expensive; the experience is the point.

  4. 22:00 · For the Shanghai-jazz vibe

In Silom, 10 min by Grab. A 1930s Shanghai opium-den-themed live-music lounge with red lacquer, plush velvet, and cabaret-style nightly performances — jazz, swing, soul. Cheongsam-clad performers swing from silks. Pure spectacle, perfectly on-brand for guests staying in a Chinatown shophouse. Reserve weekends.

  5. 22:30 · The institution

Victory Monument area, ~25 min by Grab. Bangkok's oldest live-music pub, open since 1987. Three floors, jazz on one, blues / rock on another. Where Thai musicians come to play. Less polished than the hotel bars, more soul. Open till 2am.

  6. 23:00 · The atmospheric pick

Thonglor area, ~30 min by Grab. A two-storey bar full of tiny iron-cast fairy figurines hung from the ceiling. Live jazz/blues most nights, intimate stage. Worth it for the look alone — feels like a Tim Burton film. The signature burger is also one of Bangkok's best.

  7. 23:30 · The legendary one (5 min walk)

On Soi Nana right here in Yaowarat — Bangkok's most legendary jazz bar, open since 1985. The house band has been together for decades. Sit close to the stage. Open very late on weekends. Pair it with Tep Bar earlier in the evening — both are on the same lane.
